Ghana opened its World Cup campaign without midfielder Thomas Partey after a Canadian federal judge refused to overturn Ottawa’s visa denial.
Canadian immigration officials blocked Partey from entering Canada ahead of Ghana’s match against Panama in Toronto.
The decision stems from seven rape charges and one sexual assault charge he faces in Britain. Partey has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Ghana’s government called the decision unfair and sent a formal protest note to Ottawa, asking for a review.
Canada says major sporting events do not override its immigration laws and each traveler is assessed individually.
Coach Carlos Queiroz says Ghana remains ready, despite Partey’s absence.
The case now adds diplomatic tension to Ghana’s World Cup opener, while keeping focus on Canada’s strict entry rules and Partey’s pending trial in the United Kingdom.
